Historical Overview

1954

Mr. Wilfrid Howick calls upon different Christian Middle Eastern community groups to explore ways to fill the gap of services needed for the elderly of the community. A working committee comprising members of the clergy, female volunteer groups, businessmen and relatives of the community is formed to discuss the possibility of opening a seniors’ residence for the elderly of the Christian Middle Eastern community.

1956

The Cedars Home project is launched and the first Board of Directors is established in 1956.

1957

The acquisition of a house at 95 Gouin Boulevard allows the admission of 12 senior citizens from the community. Over the years, the number of places gradually increases with the needs.

2001

Confronted with an increase in needs of the clientele and a growing demand on the part of the community, the board members, with the support of the Health and Social Services Agency, proceed to transfer the establishment to the current premises located at 1275 Côte Vertu Boulevard in Ville Saint-Laurent.

The community services for the elderly of the Christian Middle Eastern community living at home, started in the fall of 2001. These services were the fruits of many public consultations in various parishes by the members of the Board of Directors of the Cedars Home for the Elderly as well as several volunteers and members of the clergy.

2008

The Board of Directors, with the authorization of the Montreal Health and Social Services Agency, begins the process of opening an Intermediate Care Facility to respond to the needs of the elderly of the Christian Middle Eastern community who require less than 3 hours of care.

2009

In the fall of 2009, the Agency approves the Intermediate Resource project for the elderly of the Christian Middle Eastern community. The project is submitted by the CSSS Bordeaux-Cartierville et Saint-Laurent who is responsible for it and who entrusts its management to the Cedars Home through a service agreement. The Intermediate Resource is located in the facility of a private developer, Gestion globale, who is responsible for the beneficiary attendants and the lodging needs.

2011

The Intermediate Resource opens and offers services to 32 seniors of the Christian Middle Eastern community.

2015

The community services become a part of a new corporation called “Les Cèdres – Centre de support pour personnes âgées / The Cedars Elderly Support and Wellness Center”.

2016 – Present

The first Board of Directors of The Cedars Elderly Support and Wellness Center is formed and the letters patent are obtained. The community services are: Meals-on-Wheels, The Day Program, les Habitations Saint-Georges, support and guidance, and in 2018, a new program called the Daily Hello “Marhaba” program is launched.
